@carson_mckim’s TikTok revived “Grr Mondays,” a 2015 Ted 2 joke, in September
A throwaway hashtag from a movie that came out more than a decade ago became shorthand for a terrible Monday, with views in the millions.
The tea in 3
- Know Your Meme says @carson_mckim posted the Ted 2 clip on Sept 4; it passed 2.8M views in about two weeks.
- The joke comes from Ted 2 (2015), where Ted posts a photo of John on Facebook captioned “Grr Mondays.”
- A separate edit of Instagram Notes posts using the phrase passed 8.8M views in two weeks, per Know Your Meme.
If your group chat has been full of people yelling “Grr Mondays” since September, here is where it came from. TikToker @carson_mckim posted a scene from the 2015 movie Ted 2 on Sept 4 with “Grrr Mondays” across the top, and the phrase took off from there, according to Know Your Meme.
That one clip reached more than 2.8 million views in about two weeks. It was not the only one.
Where the joke comes from
Ted 2 came out on June 26, 2015. In the scene, John (Mark Wahlberg) is caught in a messy mishap. Ted takes a photo and posts it to Facebook with the caption “Grr Mondays,” per Know Your Meme and Pop Creep.
The humor is the mismatch: a mild, grumpy little phrase stuck on a chaotic image. Now it is a sarcastic way to say something went wrong at the start of the week.
How it spread
- @carson_mckim posts the clip with “Grrr Mondays” captioned. It passes 2.8M views in about two weeks.
- An Instagram user, poopinpigga, pairs the clip with a Monday forecast of “149,836 degrees.” It gets 11,000+ likes in two weeks.
- @cmj_peak posts an edit of Instagram Notes posts using the phrase. It hits 8.8M+ views in two weeks. Audio is credited to CallmeJeremy.
- @hannah.inator posts a Rick and Morty-style animation set to the sound: 656,000+ views in five days. Audio is credited to Alexy.
- Know Your Meme adds the entry, still listed as under review.
Why it stuck
The format is easy. Use the sound or the caption, add whatever your Monday looks like, and tag it. NapoleonCat’s October meme roundup lists it under October, noting it was revived on TikTok in early September. Creators have applied it to fictional characters and unrelated bad days, often spelled “Grrr Mondays” or tagged #GrrMondays.
Know Your Meme credits @carson_mckim for the clip that kicked off the September wave. It says the meme itself comes from the movie, so the joke is older than any single creator.
Where it stands
Memes like this usually burn out in weeks, but Mondays come around again every seven days. NapoleonCat still had it in its October roundup, and the Know Your Meme entry is waiting on review. View counts above are as reported by Know Your Meme about two weeks after each post.
